The July 2015 issue of the Britain’s leading monthly Deaf magazine, British Deaf News is out now!

His photographs absolutely wowed our office. When I came across Nathan Rollinson’s pictures online, I was blown away. Who was this amazing Deaf photographer who was being followed by Harrods, Tatler magazine and a string of luxury international hotels?
Some people might recognise him from his TV presenting days at BSL Zone. But since he picked up a camera at age 16, Nathan’s talent for blogging has been unleashed, with over 36,000 followers on Instagram alone. I fell in love with his photographs so deeply – that we couldn’t resist bringing you two special covers this month featuring Nathan’s work. Glimpse his amazing visual world and read about what inspires him in our cover story on page 24. Nathan reminds us that age is never a barrier when showcasing your talent and beliefs to the world.
Deaffest 2015 celebrated emerging and established talent in the field of arts, media and film and its 10th anniversary was celebrated in a grand style last month. BDN was at the festival covering the event and shares the highlights on page 12.
Also, in our special features this month, we look at the young Deaf campaigners doing it on their own terms. Deaf sisters, Lisa and Sara Kelly are One Direction obsessed like so many fans across the world. When they were denied an interpreter by promotional giant, Aiken Promotions –they refused to take No for an answer and fought back. They voiced their protests on the Nolan Live show and across national newspapers. They held their own in interviews and did not apologise for the fact that they used what some of the media described as the ‘taboo’ word: ‘discrimination’. Read about their brave fight back on page 19 and how they already show the makings of being future Deaf leaders.
As this issue of BDN shows, everyone embarks on their own journey – figuring out where they fit in the world and who they want to be. We share the stories of two young Deaf women who share what it was like discovering their Deaf identity on page 32.
What was your journey like? Write to me and share your story.
