Craig Crowley - Election 2013

26 July 2013

The British Deaf Association wishes to offer its sincere gratitude to the outgoing ICSD President Craig Crowley for his unswerving dedication and commitment to the International Deaf Sport movement over the past 4 years.

Craig was elected at the Deaflympics in Taipei 2009 and experienced the turmoil of the economic downturn almost immediately with the Winter Deaflympics in Slovakia being cancelled at the very last minute. That was followed by the shock of the withdrawals of Greece from the Summer games of 2013 and Vancouver from the Winter Games of 2015, both due to lack of funds.

The ICSD board, led by Craig, have worked tirelessly over the past 18 months with the Bulgarian Organising committee to ensure that the Deaflympics in Sofia take place this summer.  The Sofia games will have over 4,000 athletes taking part in what for many is the pinnacle of their sporting careers, and much of this is due to Craig’s drive and determination to ensure the athletes came first.

Sport is the one area that breaks down barriers. It unites us all. Sign language users, Oral, Cochlea Implants, we are as one, deaf united in sport.

The BDA send its heartiest best wishes to the Deaf athletes from Team GB and wish them every success in their endeavours to win Deaflympic medals, but most of all to compete in the Olympic spirit.

As someone who has seen this first hand, I offer sincere thanks and appreciation from the BDA and myself. The Deaflympic dream lives on.

Terry, Chair of BDA
