Key moment for European sign language community

21 August 2013

Today is a key moment for the European sign language community. 25 years ago, on 17 June 1988, the European Parliament urged the recognition and right to use national sign languages in all Member States of the then European Community. The BDA was actively involved in these days and also Malcolm Bruce MP tried to lobby the Council of Europe to add sign languages to the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages. To date, a few European countries have legal status for sign languages – another 25 years, we will see more European countries, including UK, to recognise sign languages through laws.
