Statement from the BDA on the Opening Ceremony of the Paralympics

31 August 2012

The BDA warmly welcomes the way the organisers of the opening ceremony enabled deaf people from all over the world access through sign language. It was wonderful to see the interpreters next to Her Majesty The Queen and next to the performers instead of an add-on window on screen.

We acknowledge the excellent coverage of the performances by Ch4, and it was truly inspiring to see how disabled and deaf performers were at the forefront of the evening. It was a powerful visual and iconic message to the world: "Look at US not our disability".

We earnestly hope this magnificent effort continues for the rest of the games and for the closing ceremony.
