BDA welcomes Japanese Federation of the Deaf

14 November 2012

A non typical day in the BDA London office.

On the 14th November the BDA were honoured by a delegation from the Japanese Federation of the Deaf (JFD) who had come to the UK on a fact finding mission. After the brief introductions and how we would facilitate the translation process the CEO warmly welcomed the JFD delegates.

We presented a power point presentation in response to the JFD request on information, which related to Legal, Education, Employment, Telecommunication.  Definitions of, D/deaf & disabled.  Sign Language recognition, inclusion, and as always campaigning.  I have to say the list was endless well over 100 question but we just concentrated on those issue the BDA were working in.

It was fascinating to watch the translations/interpretation at work from BSL to English, English to Japanese and then Japanese to JSL. One could pick up the occasional word but it was something else.

My thanks to David and Paul for such a comprehensive response and when you look at the information it does show how far the BDA has come and in many ways we are leading in many areas of work especially empowerment and advocacy, and our future campaigns on Bilingualism, and family curriculums.

Later they took a tour of the building and met with BDA staff.

Terry - Chair of BDA.
